Karen Simmons

Karen Simmons grew up in Europe, surrounded by art. Her love for light and color was born in her childhood, surrounded by artists and works of art. Since moving to Connecticut, Karen’s art has been nourished by the colors of the woods and seasons that surround her.

Karen received her undergraduate degree from Williams College, renowned for its undergraduate education in the history and practices of visual art. Karen studied under Tom Krens, Whitney Stoddard, Lane Faison and E.J. Johnson. After Williams, Karen continued her studies of the visual arts at the post graduate Works of Art Course at Sotheby’s.

Upon returning from London, Karen earned a graduate degree in architecture from the University of Pennsylvania and began a career in architecture. She worked in New York City, winning a Historic Preservation award for her work renovating a brownstone on Gramercy Place. She has also worked in New Jersey, and in Grenoble, France, where she was part of the winning design team for the 1992 Olympics ice skating rink, and for the city hall in Chambery, France.

Upon returning to the United States, Karen combined residential architectural work, mothering and competitive rowing. It is her hours on the water, the mists and the reflections of Lake Lillinonah and Waramaug, that drive her to paint and share such beauty as surrounds us.
