In Person & On Zoom
Registration required for In Person.
Zoom link: click here at 6:30 PM Sept. 30

Best selling cookbook authors Bruce Weinstein & Mark Scarbrough return to OWL.

You won’t want to miss the opportunity to meet these culinary experts as they guide us through the wonders of “Cold Canning.” This, their newest title, joins their internationally bestselling cookbook list at #37!

Cold canning is a revolutionary way to preserve the best of each season, without the headache. No vats of boiling water. No unwieldy tools. No long hours at the stove.

Instead, make a few jars in minutes – and save them for months to a year in your fridge or freezer. It’s easier, tastier, and more fun than traditional canning.

• Work less to get fresher flavors
• Save money with smaller batches
• Use less sugar and salt
• Trust that it’s safe
• Anyone can do it – from beginners to pickling pros!
In their team, Bruce (above in white shirt) is the chef and Mark (black shirt), is the writer. Together, they’ve published over 37 cookbooks, hit international best-seller lists, won national and international awards, and have been interviewed by the best, from Lester Holt to Barbara Walters.

BRUCE also writes knitting books, designs patterns, and teaches knitting workshops.

Besides writing their cookbooks, MARK also teaches literature classes; has a podcast called Walking With Dante; and has written a memoir. For more information about Mark’s literary side and find out when and where he’s teaching, click here.

Winsted’s Curious Cat Bookshop will be selling signed copies of the book at the event.

Tonalism with Mary Ann Hollihan

Tonalism: with Exhibition Curator, Fairfield University Museum Mary Ann Hollihan

Thursday, September 25 from 6:30 – 7:30 PM
Registration required for In Person

Are you familiar with the art term Tonalism? If your curiosity is piqued, or just want to learn more about this beautiful art form, you will want to meet Mary Ann Hollihan.

The term Tonalism is associated primarily with a type of landscape and seascape produced by artists working in and around New York and Boston during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Their predecessors were the landscape painters of the early to mid-nineteenth-century who comprised what came to be called the Hudson River School—painting canvases that explored the beauty of the Americas, proclaimed the idea of Manifest Destiny, and served the heady optimism of the young United States. The Tonalist painters embraced the ideas of a new era as the psychological wreckage of the Civil War, and increased industrialization challenged the narrative of God-ordained grandeur, classically composed vistas, and luminous,
crystalline views.

Mary Ann Hollihan is an independent art historian with a specialty in 19th-century American painting and furniture. A Connecticut native, she lives and works from a farm in Canaan, CT. She attended the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Virginia Law School, and New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts in New York. After a spell practicing law, she returned to art history, working as a research associate at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and eventually publishing a book on New York Federal furniture. She began collecting American paintings in graduate school and she and her husband Jack have amassed a significant collection of Hudson River School and tonalist painters as well as high style New York Federal furniture. Mary Ann recently curated an exhibition of tonalist paintings for the University of Fairfield Art Museum in Fairfield CT titled “Dawn & Dusk: Tonalism in Connecticut.”

Belden House & Mews Hotel Talk

A Talk with the Belden House & Mews Hotel Owner Anthony Champalimaud

Thursday, September 18 from 6:30 – 7:30 PM
In Person Only: Registration required

Belden House & Mews opened in early 2025 in the historic borough of Litchfield—the town’s first full-service high street hotel in over a century.

It’s set across a three-acre estate just south of the Litchfield Green and combines three historical structures: the 1888 Belden Mansion, a 1959 Modernist addition (the Mews), and the 1891 Firehouse, soon to serve as event space.

The project—led by developers behind Troutbeck in the Hudson Valley, working with Champalimaud Design, PBDW Architects, and Reed+Hilderbrand—is a masterclass in adaptive reuse. Every building was restored with painstaking attention to cultural and architectural detail.

Join us as Anthony Champalimaud, owner of the Belden House and Mews, describes how he and his design team transformed this landmark into a stunning hotel complex.

Meet the Author: Jodiann Tenney

Meet author Jodiann Tenney: Discussing her debut novel Carefully Vetted

Tuesday, September 9 from 6:30 – 7:30 PM
In Person Only. Registration required.

Join us as local author Jodiann Tenney discusses her debut novel, Carefully Vetted, a heartfelt story which blends small-town charm and a love for animals.

Dr. Maddy Moore has enough on her plate: two kids, a never-ending line of four-legged patients, and exactly zero interest in dating. Her idea of romance? A glass of wine on the porch, a hot bath, and an emptied dishwasher.

So, when an entitled, famous actor comes to town, sparks fly and headlines swirl in her sleepy Northwest Connecticut town. Maddy must decide: is this just another role he’s playing—or the start of something real?

Jodiann Tenney is a fiction lover, educator, and dedicated community volunteer. After raising two sons and earning a doctoral degree in educational administration, she decided it was finally time to try her hand at her favorite genre—romance. Carefully Vetted is her debut novel. Jodiann lives in Litchfield with her husband and mischievous dachshund, Fritz.
