Closing Reception

Please join us this Saturday from 12pm-3pm for the closing reception of TREEFORMS, a solo show of new and recent paintings and works on paper by Connecticut based artist, Erin Koch Smith.

“My work often starts with something abstract – like a wayward emotion, a memory, or a hard to remember dream. Narrative is important to my work as an impetus, but I am always seeking places to depart from intentions, combine visual languages, and find something new or surprising. I am interested in the middle of things, facts into fiction, real into imagination, observation into abstraction, painting into drawing, childhood into growing up. My work often emerges out of trial, error, and engagement with materials and color. I employ the logic of daydreams and let the materiality of the work play a part in what happens next in hopes of giving language to things that are hard to talk about in other ways – things like shame, joy, love, and loss.

Treeforms are a play on Colorforms, the childhood toy with plastic shapes and colors that can be moved around to form pictures and stories. There is a loose play with the idea of a treehouse forming around trees that are also in flux. Everything is in a state of moving, hiding, shifting, dancing, and growing. I am interested in the romance of a treehouse as an ideal, built out of love, as a place that can be a shelter or permission to dream. It is a structure that is both an interior and exterior, and I use it as a metaphor for shame, but also for imagination. Treehouses feel rooted in childhood, slightly magical, built around a tree, which is simultaneously alive and rooted. And for the most part, you can’t live there. There is no running water, no heat, often no walls or permanent protection. There is always a time where you have to come down.” – Erin Koch Smith

Opening Reception

Join us on Saturday, November 22, for the opening of MOM, a solo show of new and recent work by New Haven based artist, Jessica Smolinski. The opening reception will take place from 2pm-4pm.

“The word “mom” carries the weight of deep love, longing, and complexity for me. Several years ago, I lost my mother unexpectedly. Now, as a mother to rapidly growing teenagers, I navigate the layered experiences of motherhood, life, loss, and healing. My studio practice is shaped by the absence of my mother, the presence of my own children, and the ongoing process of making sense of a life marked by the challenges of being the child of an addict. This multimedia exhibition includes works that grapple with memories and reflections of my mom and me.

A constant element throughout the exhibition is the inclusion of my mother’s handwriting, which I’ve always loved. Sourcing the letters of the alphabet from cards I’ve saved, tracing her writing, digitizing, and then laser-etching feels sweet and desperate. I can replicate the form of her letters, but not the gesture, the emotion, or the life behind them. I’m using her handwriting (mom font!) to write lines from Emily Dickinson’s poems that resonate and connect to my work. The act of retracing my mother’s handwriting is an attempt to know her better, but using words that translate the dynamic feelings I have about life and death in ways I fumble to articulate.

Pieced Together is a series of denim textile works made of scraps that are sewn together like memories. They speak to a life cut short and to the rapid passage of time. The denim is an anecdotal way to honor my mother, whose name was Jean. Photographs are laser-etched or embroidered into the denim, serving as both a document and a material. A bird in hand is one example of an image repeated throughout the works, symbolizing the preciousness of a rare and fleeting moment. All of the imagery marks small, everyday moments—seasonal shifts, the cycles of growth and decay.

The photo series Stuck documents balloons caught in the landscape, a post-celebratory event. To me, the images embody feelings of both joy and sadness. Humor is also present, and a key component for me to survive this complicated life.

Garden Cinema records various late-summer gardens, cast as shadows. The video is projected on a pixel and quilt-like screen, fusing domestic tradition with the language of photography.

Mom offers a space to reflect on how maternal legacies are passed down, altered, and remembered—not only through photographs or objects, but through the act of creating itself. It is an intimate meditation on connection, impermanence, and how the past is continually rethreaded into the present.” – Jessica Smolinksi

Anne of Green Gables

St. Paul Performing Arts Performs
Anne of Green Gables

Bristol CT, November 4, 2025 – St. Paul Catholic High School performing arts program is excited to present its fall 2025 production, Anne of Green Gables next weekend.

Generations of readers have adored the best-selling novel Anne of Green Gables and now this new adaptation for young audiences comes to the stage at St. Paul Catholic High School. The award-winning performing arts program will present Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery November 14-16.

In this adaptation by Sylvia Ashby, aging brother and sister Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert send to an orphanage for a boy to help on the farm. To everyone’s surprise, however, a mix-up brings them a romantic and hot-headed 11-year-old girl, Anne Shirley. Over the years, she wins their hearts and turns their stodgy, rural Prince Edward Island community into a bright world of “kindred spirits.”

Anne of Green Gables is being brought to life on stage by an extremely talented cast under the direction of Mark Mazzarella ‘78. Savannah Sullivan, a sophomore, will be portraying the “loquacious orphan” Anne Shirley along with 26 members of the performing arts troupe. This stage adaptation is faithful to the original novel and is appropriate for all ages.

Tickets are on sale now at www.spchs.com/performingartstickets for the following three performances:
Friday, November 14th at 7:00pm, Saturday, November 15th at 7:00pm and Sunday, November 16th at 2:00pm.

Tickets can also be purchased at the door. All seats are reserved seating $20 for adults (18+), $15 for students (18 and under), and $15 for seniors (65+).

West Cornwall 12 Days of Xmas

The 6th year of West Cornwall’s 12 Days of Chirstmas! 12 local artists create unique interpretations of the timeless 12 Days of Christmas holiday rhyme and display their works of art in 12 windows of businesses throughout West Cornwall. It’s like a walkable art gallery :) This year the opening is taking place on Saturday, December 13th at 5pm.

Kids collect stickers at each artist’s window and get a prize if they collect all twelve stickers. Originally it was a low key and lovely way to spend an hour walking around town with family and friends. The last couple of years we’ve ramped it up a bit and had an opening night with a raclette station, hot chocolate, coffee, and a visit from Santa and Mrs Clause.

Scattered throughout businesses of downtown West Cornwall, Connecticut.
