The David M. Hunt Library will host local writer and photographer Babs Perkins on Saturday, November 15th at 2pm for “In Search of the Whey: Tracking down a Balkan cheese on the verge of extinction and why it matters to us in NWCT.” Perkins has spent over 12 years traveling across Bosnia & Hercegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, and Serbia seeking out traditional food producers, including beekeepers, shepherds, wine and cheese makers, most specifically the remaining producers of the cheese know as Sir iz Mijeha/Mješine/Mišine (depending on the country/language spoken). Babs combines her photographs with extensive ethnographic field research and works with local producers and organizers in Hercegovina to help them better tell their stories and advocate on their own behalf for recognition and resources in hopes of ensuring a future for the producers and the very product itself. Babs will have samples of this rare cheese on hand to share with us after the event.
