Pastels on Display in Plymouth

Experience the Beauty of Nature Through the Pastels of Plymouth Artist Virginia Briatico at Books & Art on Main in Plymouth Through January 2

Virginia Briatico is a pastel artist specializing in wildlife, nature-related themes, and pet portraits. Several pieces of her artwork will be on display at Books & Art on Main bookstore and art gallery in Plymouth, Connecticut.

Works on display include Papa Bear (Black Bear), The Perfect Pad (Green Frog), Treading Thin Ice (Fox Crossing Pond), White Lightning (White Rooster), Bamboo Lookout (Cardinal in Bamboo), Little Dandy (Black Rooster), Fiery Vision (Large Cardinal/Bittersweet), Small Owl, Big Attitude (Saw Whet Owl), and Bi-Colored Boletes (Mushrooms).

After retiring as a finance administrator, Briatico took a class in pastels taught by artist P. Abbe Wade (P. R. Baily), at the Farmington River School of Art. That served as a catalyst for her artistic journey. Wildlife viewed through her window in a former home overlooking a lake has inspired much of Briatico’s work, along with subjects from her rural childhood. Sightings that have inspired her paintings include those of broad-winged and sharp-shinned hawks, osprey, great blue herons, belted kingfishers, mallards, and merganser ducks. Additional subjects Briatico loves to paint include butterflies and flowers in her garden, birds at her feeder, and the occasional fox and black bear.

Briatico’s pastels are sought by collectors and have been exhibited at P.S. Gallery in Litchfield and at various other galleries throughout Connecticut. Her solo exhibits include “Wings, Paws, and Petals” at the Stanley Whitman House in Farmington; “Wild and Fancy” at the Gallery on the Green in Canton (as a member of the Canton Artists’ Guild); and an exhibit at the Harry C. Barnes Memorial Nature Center in Bristol.

She has also participated in two juried exhibits. Her depiction of a Great Blue Heron was featured in an online virtual exhibit hosted by the Great Hollow Nature Preserve, New Fairfield, Connecticut. Her pastel of a Barred Owl was featured in a New Hartford Art League juried exhibit.

Briatico’s art is on display at Books & Art on Main through January 2. Though her work has been displayed throughout the state, she says, “It’s really nice to be able to display my work in a gallery that’s close to home.”

Said Books & Art on Main proprietor Robert Schwalb, “Virginia’s love of nature and close attention to detail are evident in her paintings. We’re thrilled to be able to feature Virginia’s beautiful pastels along with our other works of art.”

Learning from the Past situates contemporary sculpture within artistic practices ranging from ancient periods to those in recent memory. Featuring the work of artists from the New England region, New England Sculpture Association at the MATT: Learning from the Past is a celebration of the past, present, and future of sculpture.

Who We Are

December 14, 2025 – March 8, 2026

Who We Are is a compelling photographic exhibit that celebrates the diversity and individuality of everyday people through an intimate, dual-layered narrative. The work challenges stereotypes and encourages empathy by allowing people to tell their own stories, reminding us that beneath our differences, we all share a common humanity. Through Who We Are, visitors will experience a mosaic of voices and faces that together tell a larger story about identity, resilience, and connection in every day life.
