Illustrators in Cornwall

The Cornwall CT Library is delighted to present Illustrating the Chronicle, a selection of whimsical illustrations that have appeared in the Cornwall Chronicle from its founding in 1991 to the present. The piece that accompanies this article is by Adam Van Doren.

***If you haven’t seen the Cornwall Chronicle or want to check out a nifty selection of its art talent, google it and search for “illustrations.” The Bonus Fall 2024 Archive Issue has a nice assortment of animal illustrations.***

With this show, the library celebrates the Chronicle, arguably the monthly infusion that binds the community together. The Chronicle is the product of hard work by volunteers, artists included, laboring in a chaotic creative environment, under deadline. There is a great variety in the art considered—no “Chronicle style” is imposed—and in how it is presented, from ten-to-a-page to one tiny drawing. For all residents, it’s a pleasure to see all the art and writing talent in town and enjoy how seasons and events are interpreted.

Former Chronicle president Paul DeAngelis says that he likes to think about the illustrations “as the tone-setting frame for the articles: take them away and you rob the paper of its founding spirit— the wry, often witty commentary that lets us look in the Cornwall mirror and see ourselves from a slight distance.”

Creators of those whimsical Chronicle illustrations have all been from Cornwall, either full- or part-time, and have ranged from about age 19 to 90. Several current illustrators have been published in the Chronicle for years. Sometimes, Illustrations Editor Valorie Fisher might approach new illustrator prospects directly or through a recommendation, or they might approach Valorie themselves. She says “Illustrators choose a month on a first-come basis…usually one illustrator per month. They choose what they would like to draw…sometimes they confer with the monthly editors about upcoming articles, but that is often hard to coordinate with tight schedules and deadlines…every month they eagerly step up!”

Lucky us!

Some but not all of the illustrations on view at the show will be for sale. The Coloring Cornwall and Cornwall Companion books from the Chronicle will also be for sale.

Illustrating the Chronicle runs from November 2 to December 28,
Opening Reception on November 2, 5-7 pm. Reservations available on library website.

Bach: Christmas Oratorio

This program includes Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Ehre sei dir, Gott, gesungen“ (Let honor be sung to you, O God), the fifth cantata of his Christmas Oratorio. This cantata is about the journey of the wise men and the symbolism of light winning over darkness. An important composer in Bach’s circle was his mentor Dietrich Buxtehude, the renowned North German organist and cantor. His New Year’s, and Johann Schelle’s Advent, cantatas, Johann Rosenmüller’s Magnificat, and Philipp Erlebach’s Christmas cantata are followed by a work of the later Jeremias du Grain, a student of Bach’s close friend Georg Philipp Telemann. Several of these cantatas are scored for orchestra with trumpets, which symbolized royalty and Christ’s status as the “King of Kings.” In contrast to this stand intimate, unaccompanied choral works by the award-winning contemporary North American female composers Emily Drum, MaryAnne Muglia, and Christine Donkin.

The performers are Crescendo Chorus, Paulina Francisco, soprano, Nicholas Tamagna, countertenor, Gene Stenger, tenor, Douglas Williams, bass-baritone, and Crescendo Period Instrument Orchestra, led by Christine Gevert.

This concert will be repeated the following day, Sunday, December 29, 2024 at 4 pm at Saint James Place ~ 352 Main Street, Great Barrington, MA 01230

Support for these concerts has been provided by the Connecticut State Department of Economic and Community Development/Connecticut Office of the Arts (COA) from the Connecticut State Legislature, and NBT Bank. We also thank WMNR Fine Arts Radio for their ongoing support.

Cooking at The Silo

A Vegan Tour of Greek Cuisine
Monday, October 21 6PM
Chef Constantine “Dino” Kolitsas
The vegan tradition within Greek cuisine is rooted in the poverty experienced in the country through most of the 20th century, and the very lengthy Orthodox fasting calendar during which the observant abstain from meat, dairy, and fish. As a result, the Greek kitchen has developed a wide range of incredible vegan dishes that represent the best of the Mediterranean Diet. At Greca, Chef Dino has championed vegan Greek dishes, which are represented on his menu and the focus of several tasting dinners held at the restaurant.
Menu: Santorini Fava (yellow split pea spread), Fasolia (green beans in an EVOO and fresh tomato sauce), Stuffed Tomatoes, and Imam Baildi (slow-roasted eggplant stuffed with onions in an aromatic tomato sauce).
Hands-On Participation.
