Common Ground with Jane Whitney: Hope, Healing & Humor

In an age of intense partisan division and ongoing culture wars, optimism and hope feel as rare as multi-carat emeralds. The American spirit, once defined by resilience, often seems overshadowed by despair. Yet, amid this darkness, some voices stand out with messages of hope, healing, and humor.

In this episode of Common Ground with Jane Whitney, we hear from a diverse group of guests—bipartisan thought leaders. They share their insights on how we can revive the optimism that Americans once celebrated as their birthright.

PBS release date is October 28. More info

François Dischinger Into The Light

François Dischinger Into The Light: Photography + Painting Opening Saturday Nov 2 Reception 5-8pm

Francois Dischinger’s work delves the potential of analogue photography and its historical relevance. Referencing the techniques of Man Ray and Gottfried Jager he articulates an artistic impulse on light sensitive papers—resultant explosions of color and gestural expressions that convey mysterious shapes and shadows, leaving the viewer to interpret their little trip anyway they like.
The work is produced using traditional photographic dark room materials such as light sensitive paper, modified enlargers, graphic screens, chemistry and various actions all employed in a completely dark studio.
Literally, working on the surface of the photographic paper the intervening “light measures” generate a mark.. a line, a shadow, or blur, while the resulting compositions on the photographic paper are then processed in chemistry and subtle interventions in temperature and timing result in a unique work.

Joy Brown Mural

On View November 11-13, 11-5 pm and by appointment through Nov 16th

Reception: Saturday, November 12, 4-7 pm
Kent Green, 4 Landmark Lane, Kent CT

Contact: joy@joybrownstudio.com

Presentation: 5:30 | Eduardo Montes-Bradley, acclaimed documentary film maker, will talk about and present footage of the film being made about this mural.

The Mural
The Horokan museum (meaning “to wander”) is dedicated to the children of Shin’s hometown. He proposed the theme of the mural — One World — inspired by the international spirit of the continuing friendships of our high school class in Japan, while reflecting Shin’s way of life and support of art.

From the original sketches and carving in clay to the firing in my Japanese style wood-firing kiln here in Kent, the mural is now complete! I would be thrilled for you to join us to celebrate and see the whole mural before it heads to its new home in Japan.

The Film
Eduardo and Heritage Film Project are making a film about the artistic and spiritual journey of the mural from its inspiration to the installation in Japan, including the continuing thread of east and west in my life and work and in our community, created through the love, magic and joy in art. See these two beautiful outTakes Eduardo made of the firing and studio this summer.

We need your help to make this film! If you’d like to contribute or learn more, go to Documentary Film Fund, or contact its co-producer, Robert Herzog, at zog@thezog.com.

Journey to Pine Ridge

Celebrate Native American Heritage Month with Journey to Pine Ridge, a slide show and talk at the Cornwall CT Library. Discover how outsiders, including residents of Cornwall and elsewhere, are visiting the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, and helping and learning from the Oglala Lakota people.

It’s a long way from Cornwall to Pine Ridge in South Dakota. Roughly 1,700 miles away from Connecticut, it might not at first seem that far away. But it often has outsize, even profound significance for outsiders who spend a week on the reservation, working and meeting with the Oglala Lakota people under the auspices of the Re-Member organization.

The Pine Ridge reservation is the size of Connecticut and the poorest county in the United States, with the highest rates of diabetes, suicide, and substance abuse. Broken treaties, bureaucratic dysfunction, and other problems have left tribal members in terrible straits for many years.

Despite this, the Oglala Lakota people are caring, courageous, and generous, proud of their rich traditional culture. Being heard by and knowing people from beyond the reservation is powerful for them, and outsiders often remark on the new hope and positive change they see developing on the reservation over time.

During a typical week outsiders spend part of their time serving the people of Pine Ridge in work-related projects, for example, building bunk beds because most folks live in trailers that house an extended family, or building outhouses because the trailers do not have running water. The rest of the week is cultural connection, for example, learning about the history of the reservation, or visiting the site of the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890 and hearing from descendants of those who were there. Nightly speakers are people from the reservation who might be school teachers or storytellers. Their personal stories and historical accounts are profoundly moving.

Although the delegation from Cornwall has been led for the past 10 years by the Reverend Micki Nunn-Miller, the pastor of the Congregational Church in Cornwall, it is not affiliated with any religious, political or policy group. This is also true of Re-Member, whose stated purpose is to “improve the quality of life for those who live here, and provide meaningful opportunities to serve and learn for those who volunteer and support our work.”

On November 2, Becky Hurlburt and Cay Hosterman, both veterans of previous trips, will talk about their experiences and show slides. Micki Nunn-Miller will share her extensive insight into the program, and there will be time for Q&A. Perhaps you will be inspired to sign up for this year’s trip, or find another way to contribute. Admission to this talk is free, and it is not a fundraising event.

Journey to Pine Ridge is on November 2 at 2 pm at the Cornwall CT Library,
Reservations available on library website.
