Lake Waramaug Polar Bear

The 7.8 mile loop of Lake Waramaug has become an annual winter tradition for hundreds of area runners. The scenic course travels counterclockwise along the shoreline of the glacial lake while passing through Washington, Warren and Kent. The route is primarily flat with a few gentle rolling hills. The final .2 miles provides a true test for all as runners ascend the unforgiving Hopkins Hill to the finish line at Hopkins Vineyard.

The Run is organized and sponsored by TrailHeads, a Kent, CT based online retailer of hats, headbands and gloves for runners.

The event is to benefit Guiding Eyes for the Blind, an organization that raises and trains guide dogs to partner with blind or visually impaired people.

Writing Workshops

11:00 – 12:30 PM Grades 5-8 Writing Workshop
2:00 – 4:00 PM High School & Adult Writing Workshop

In recognition of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), authors Lorien Lawrence and Steve Parlato will offer two writing workshops at the Woodbury Public Library for suitable for middle schoolers, teens, and adults on Saturday, November 9th. In the student workshop for young writers in grades 5-8, author Lorien Lawrence will help participants come up with a writing idea and map out a story plot. The group will discuss tips and tricks, and look at some examples from Lorien’s own writing and have the opportunity to work and get feedback throughout the workshop. Refreshments for the young writers are included in the workshop which is offered at 11:00 -12:30 PM.

Lorien Lawrence is a 7th grade Language Arts teacher from Connecticut. She is also the middle grade author of the spooky Fright Watch series, as well as the forthcoming stand-alone: The Many Hauntings of the Manning Family.

The afternoon writing workshop, “Fact into Fiction” with author/educator Steven Parlato is offered at 2:00 – 4:00 PM and is open to adults and high school students. Steven will share examples from his novels and offer prompts that encourage participants to incorporate true-life details and sensory description into their writing to create vivid, authentic fiction.

Award-winning author and poet, Steven Parlato, has work in Freshwater, Peregrine, MARGIE, and other journals. Upon the 2013 release of his YA debut, The Namesake, Publishers Weekly called Parlato “a name to watch.” His followup novel, The Precious Dreadful, has been described as “a dark, poignant exploration of friendship, loss, and the very real power of storytelling.” A college professor, artist, and actor, Steve has played roles including the Scarecrow and Macbeth. He lives in Middlebury with his family. While the programs are free and open to all interested writers, space is limited and registration is required.
