On Saturday, April 4th at 2 pm local history teacher and author Peter Vermilyea will speak about his new book, Litchfield County and the Revolutionary War. Vermilyea’s talk will focus on Litchfield resident Oliver Wolcott Sr. who was a Revolutionary War patriot, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and Brigadier General of the Connecticut militia. Wolcott also oversaw the transportation of a toppled statue of King George III from New York City to his hometown, where it was melted down and turned into more than forty thousand musket balls. Litchfield County and the Revolutionary War reveals how liberty, sacrifice, and resilience in a small corner of New England helped shape the destiny of a new nation.
Peter Vermilyea teaches history at Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village, Connecticut, and for the University of Connecticut. Vermilyea is the author or editor of six books, including Hidden History of Litchfield County, which received the 2015 CultureMax Award; Wicked Litchfield County; and Litchfield County and the Civil War.

In-Person & on Zoom

Local author and historian Peter Vermilyea will explore the American Revolution through the lives of Loyalists in Litchfield County, Connecticut. By tracing the stories of two well-known figures alongside lesser-known, often forgotten individuals, it reveals the personal dilemmas, divided loyalties, and local consequences of the Revolutionary War. Together, these stories highlight the Revolution’s complexity beyond simple Patriot-versus-Loyalist narratives.
Peter Vermilyea teaches history at Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Falls Village, CT and at Western Connecticut State University. A graduate of Gettysburg College, he serves as the scholarship director of his alma mater’s Civil War Institute. He is the author or editor of five books and fifteen articles, most on aspects of Civil War history.

The Cornwall Library is delighted to celebrate Women’s History Month by presenting Letty Cottin Pogrebin, the American feminist, writer, journalist, and social activist who was one of the founding editors of Ms. Magazine. She is now a key figure in second-wave feminism and Jewish activism, and has published more than a dozen books, including memoirs, nonfiction, and novels.
Pogrebin will be interviewed by Anne Kreamer, a journalist and author who specializes in business, work/life balance, culture, and women’s issues. Her career has included positions as varied as director of development for CBS Educational and Professional Publishing, and serving on the board of trustees for the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.
Pogrebin and Kreamer plan a wide-ranging conversation, covering subjects such as an overview of feminism now and at earlier stages, the effect of Project 2025 on women’s issues, and the problems women still have in transitioning from advanced graduate school programs into the executive suite.
After the interview, there will be a Q & A session with the audience. Please register on the library website at the URL given below.
