Second Act: Encore!

Missed Bob’s first Second Act performance? We’re doing an encore performance for one night only at the Mattatuck Museum! Bob’s first passion was for the theater. Through college, graduate school, and a teaching fellowship at the Folger Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, D.C., Bob pursued his dream of becoming a working actor. When he moved to New York City, Bob continued acting, but found himself increasingly working for non-profits, eventually leading him to the Mattatuck Museum.

Using the lessons and talents he learned from the stage, Bob found new ways help others. This set him on a new path with a wide variety of opportunities and experiences, learning that working with like-minded souls to help others can be tremendously fulfilling — and that knowing how to tap dance can come in handy, too!

Who was master thief Stéphane Breitwieser? In this book, we’ll dive into the strange and fascinating life of the man who stole more than three hundred artworks from museums and cathedrals across Europe. Driven by obsession, over-confidence, and a reckless disregard for risk, Breitwieser’s crimes eventually led to his downfall. As we read The Art Thief: A True Story of Love, Crime, and a Dangerous Obsession by Michael Finkel, we’ll ask the big question: was it all worth it?

Intermediate Youth Art Workshop: Colors of Me
Get ready to express your authentic self and explore who you are! We’ll chat about how we view ourselves in the world and trace our very own self-portraits. Once our portraits are complete, we’ll bring them to life with oil pastels, choosing colors that reflect our inner identity and what makes you uniquely you.

This class is specifically designed for children ages 10-15, to enhance their artistic interests and talents. It is for this reason that we kindly ask parents and siblings to wait outside of the classroom for the duration of the program.

Victorian Hairwork Workshop

Victorian Hairwork Workshop
The 19th century of the Victorian Era was a time rife with sentimental culture. Death rates were high due to numerous factors including disease, war, and high childhood mortality. Queen Victoria was an unlikely fashion icon and submerged herself in mourning after the deaths of both her husband, Prince Albert, and her mother in 1861. Aside from her mostly black wardrobe, she was widely known for her love of mourning jewelry, which very contained hair of a loved one inside.

Victorian hairwork became very popular in both jewelry and shadowbox form during the 19th century and into the beginning of the 20th century. It transcended the concept of a wearable human relic into a fashion statement during this time period.

In today’s workshop, participants will learn to create wire-work items that would be used in shadowbox creation. We will be working with copper wire and horsehair to form intricate twists and braiding that can be manipulated in various ways to form flowers, leaves, berries, and other shapes. Participants will be able to make an item suitable for mounting in a frame, or wearing as a brooch or hairclip.

Additional Fee Required

Combination Ticket: $180 Symposium Admission with 3 Hour Victorian Hairwork Workshop
