Opening Reception

The Judy Black Memorial Park and Gardens is pleased to welcome “Vignettes and Portals,” an art exhibition by Greg St. John on view Friday, April 11 through Sunday, April 27.

An opening reception will be held on Saturday, April 12 from 1 to 3 p.m.

The drawings and paintings in this show were inspired by the urgency of the passing of time and the preciousness of life. The work consists of imagery inspired by the natural world as expressed in abstract marks, values, shapes and colors. They are meant to convey the artist’s thoughts and feelings about his life and the world we live in.

Obsessed with Light

One night only! See OBSESSED WITH LIGHT at Bantam Cinema with a Q&A from special guests Executive Producer Elizabeth Rodriguez Chandler and Filmmakers Zeva Oelbaum and Sabine Krayenbühl.

OBSESSED WITH LIGHT pulls back the curtain on Loïe Fuller (1862-1928), a wildly original performer and pioneer of modern dance. Creating a dialogue between the past and the present, the documentary delves into the astonishing influence Fuller’s work has on contemporary culture including artists like Taylor Swift, Bill T. Jones, Shakira and William Kentridge, Red Hot Chili Peppers among many others. Fuller developed a completely new kind of spectacle which combined dance, fabric and movement. It’s about a woman who became famous on her own terms – unapologetic about her body type and open about her sexuality.

Ukrainian Egg Decorating

Pysanky Ukrainian Egg Decorating Workshop

6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
$20.00
* Pre-registration & pre-payment required.
Pysanky Ukrainian Egg Decorating Workshop with Sharon Leonard “The Egglady.”

Our guest, Sharon Leonard “The Egglady” will teach and demonstrate the Art of Ukrainian Easter Egg decoration. The Pysanky decorating process is relatively simple but keeping a steady hand can be a challenge. The process involves applying melted wax to the eggshell in a design, then dipping it into different colored dyes, layer by layer. Going progressively darker, the process is repeated for each color and by the end of the process the egg will be covered with a great deal of wax. The next step shows something spectacular. Using the side of a candle flame, guests melt away the wax to reveal a brilliantly colored egg.

CT Troubadour Live

CT Troubadour Kala Farnham’s Live Performance

7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Cost: $10 adults, $5 for 17 & under
* Pre-registration encouraged

Kala Farnham of Pomfret Center is Connecticut’s 18th State Troubadour.

Kala Farnham is a multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter from the Quiet Corner of Connecticut. She began her musical journey at a young age, and in high school she established herself as a working musician. In college, she furthered her studies in Music Performance and Composition while also pursing Human Services and Mental Health. Together, these interests drive her passion for the healing and transformative power of musical storytelling. Therefore, it is no surprise that Kala also serves as a certified Crisis Counselor, and works with an array of populations such as at-risk youth, those who suffer from mental illness, and survivors of trauma. She has taught, performed for, and worked with youth programs, students with learning disabilities, individuals recovering from addiction, and those who have lost loved ones to suicide. Kala is currently studying sound healing and Nada Yoga and plans to incorporate elements of the practice into her work.

Kala’s signature songwriting has been likened to a reinvention of the traditional folk with influences of pop, Broadway, and world music. Her affinity for poetry and creative writing is evident through lyricism that springs to life with heartfelt and creative storytelling, cultural references, and rich metaphor. Her work has garnered numerous awards and media attention, including 2020 Falcon Ridge Festival Emerging Artist, 2019 Rose Garden Performing Songwriter Contest winner, 2019 Rocky Mountain Folks Fest honorable mention

As the new Connecticut State Troubadour, Kala plans to apply her foundations and strong background in music performance and human service in this honorary role to foster healing and community connection through music.

As part of the review and selection process, panelist’s praised Kala’s musicianship and songwriting, noting that she exudes an ‘open energy’ sure to attract listeners and perhaps inspire young artists’ interest in the Troubadour opportunity. The panel of reviewers included Daniel Salazar Jr., Nekita Waller, and Jake Goldbas.
