The Gunn Memorial Library invites readers to join a discussion of Milkman by Anna Burns, winner of the 2018 Booker Prize for Fiction, as part of a winter reading challenge series.
Set in an unnamed city during a time of political and social unrest, Milkman tells the story of a young woman—known only as middle sister—who finds herself the subject of unwanted attention from a local paramilitary figure called the milkman. Her refusal to conform, her habit of “reading while walking,” and her independence make her stand out for all the wrong reasons in a community where silence and suspicion dominate daily life.
With dark humor and rhythmic prose, Anna Burns delivers a powerful exploration of identity, gossip, and resistance in a society where even small acts of individuality can be seen as dangerous. Milkman is both unsettling and deeply human, prompting readers to consider how power, gender, and fear shape the way we live and speak.
