Tiny Abolitionist Film Festival

Bantam, CT. Kicking off with an already sold out screening of the Tiny Abolitionist Film Festival, in partnership with The John Brown Project, Culture 4 A Cause and Berlin Equity Action Team, this month Bantam Cinema & Arts Center will dedicate several weeks to honoring black filmmakers and black stories.

The Tiny Abolitionist Film Festival will feature screenings of His Truth is Marching On by Torrington filmmaker Dan Morrison and The 29th Connecticut created by the Berlin Equity Action Team (BEAT), as well as a live African drumming circle, and a Harriet Tubman reenactment by Torrington-based Effie Mwando. Seats for this opening event on Friday, February 16th have been sold out for some time – the price of admission is a non-perishable food item for the local food bank.

Between Saturday February 17th and Thursday February 22nd, the beloved historic nonprofit venue will screen a free rotation of John Singleton’s Boyz n the Hood, Regina King’s One Night in Miami, Ava DuVernay’s Selma and Jordan Peele’s Get Out. All seats for these films are free and underwritten by CT Humanities. Seats can be reserved online at bantamcinema.org.

Starting Friday, February 23rd, DuVernay’s Origin and The Color Purple from Ghanaian filmmaker Blitz Bazawule will screen in rotation until Thursday, February 29th. Tickets for Origin and The Color Purple are on sale now at $12.50 for adults, $10.50 for senior citizens, students and active military, and $8.50 for patrons 13 and younger.

“We are honored to expand our partnership this year after last year’s very successful work with Culture 4 A Cause, and are very grateful to CT Humanities for their support of our efforts,” says Executive Director Robert Kwalick. “February is a unique opportunity to share the community-building potential of cinema specifically, and the arts in general, with a wider audience.”
