Author Talk — “Playing for Freedom”: The Journey of Afghan Violist Zarifa Adiba

Plein Air

The watercolors of Dorothy Spears evoke the natural delights of the northwest corner of Connecticut, sometimes explicitly, as in Warren Town Beach, Autumn (shown above) but always with fine restraint. This painting consists of a suggestion of two Adirondack chairs facing a hint of shoreline in muted fall color. The rest, including land, water, and sky, is only blank white watercolor paper, but the effect is eloquently seasonal and lake-like.

Spears says about her work, “For me, as a writer and an artist, it’s what remains unsaid or unseen—in my watercolors, for example, the white of the page—that gives shape to everything else.”

She writes regularly about art for the New York Times and many other magazines and newspapers. She studied art at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Parsons School of Design in Paris.

Range Life

Peggy Mercury is please to announce our next exhibit RANGE LIFE by Gregory Thrasher.

Range Life by Gregory Thrasher
March 1st through April 20th
Opening Reception Saturday, March 1st from 4-6pm

Gregory Thrasher is a Mexican-American artist born and raised in the border town of El Paso, Texas. He lives and works between Brooklyn, NY, and rural Northwest Connecticut. Influenced by his ever-changing environments, the tableaus within these landscapes scrutinize the anxieties between our natural environment, industry, and Empire. His work is sardonic, without being cynical. One might feel disoriented or entranced when viewing his paintings as nothing is static; everything is in motion. The intention is to agitate the viewer, not as an infliction, but as an invitation: to help people access the psychic through the visceral and achieve gnosis through mania.

OWL Virtual: Masterpiece Mayhem
For families!

Join us for our third year of OWL Virtual: Masterpiece Mayhem! March may go out like a lamb here in New England but it comes in like a lion!
