Please save the date for the opening of STREAMERS a solo show of new paintings by Queens, NY based artist Aliza Morell. The show will open on Saturday September 5 with an opening reception with the artist from 2pm-4pm.

“My latest body of work presents holographic streamers against flat fields of color. The work begins with constructions of ribbon and cardboard which I draw and continue to compose two-dimensionally. The images are then transferred to canvas via a layered material process.

I’m attracted to lenticular surfaces because they are so difficult to see clearly – changing as you move and impossible to photograph. The sensational qualities of something designed to be so disposable feel at once full of hope and tragedy. For me, the paintings are about that sense of persistent elusivity.

In the studio, this material provides a way to sculpt space with economy, and lends to deeply searching work with color. I don’t try to paint the iridescent films realistically, but rather, to use the power of color to project its own experience. My inspirations are equal parts Albers, Sandback, and the window displays at the dollar store by my bus stop.

Streamers mark the site of an event. Here, the event is simply to look. Reflecting a sense of interiority, I hope they operate physically, resonating in the body with uplift or commiseration.” – Aliza Morell

Aliza Morell holds an MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University (2014) and a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2005). She presented a solo show at Massey Klein Gallery, NY, New York in 2003, and a two-person booth with the gallery at the Untitled Art Show in Miami, FL later that year. Group exhibitions across New York include Geary, Thierry Goldberg Gallery, Elijah Wheat Showroom, Nancy Margolis Gallery, and SPRING/BREAK Art Show, among many others. Further afield she has participated in group shows at Glass Rice (San Francisco, CA), Tinney Contemporary (Nashville, TN), Tempus Projects, (Tampa, FL), and Camayhus Gallery (Atlanta, GA). Morell’s work has been featured in New American Paintings three times (2022, 2017, 2014), Hyperalleric, Create Magazine, and Two Coats of Paint. The artist has completed a number of artist residencies, including Vermont Studio Center (Johnson, VT), ACRE (Steuben, WI), Oxbow (Sautatuc, MI), and Harold Arts (Chesterhill, OH). Morell currently lives and works in Ridgewood, Queens.
