Monday Scholars – Shakespeare’s Tragedies
Monday Scholars combines the best of online learning with live virtual discussion! All you need to do in advance is be eager to learn and discuss. Each week, you will log in and together, via Zoom, all of us will watch approximately one hour of this lecture series, then, via Zoom, OWL’s Caroline Ugurlu will lead everyone in a discussion of what we just watched.
About the course: Shakespeare’s contributions to stage and language are unequaled. But beyond his astonishing feats of language and dramatic impact, Shakespeare also left us a legacy, crafted from his experiences and explorations, of suffering and transgression in his six great mature tragedies: Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, Macbeth, Antony and Cleopatra, and Coriolanus. In this series, we will aim to take you deep within each play. You will observe Shakespeare’s protagonists struggling to make choices in the face of competing social, moral, and psychological pressures, and using that to gain insight.
About the Professor: Dr. Clare R. Kinney is Associate Professor of English at the University of Virginia. She earned her B.A. in English at Cambridge University. Under a Paul W. Mellon Fellowship, she attended Yale University, where she earned her Ph.D. Professor Kinney has published many articles, including essays on Shakespeare and has participated in staged readings of plays by Shakespeare’s contemporaries at the Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton, Virginia, a reconstruction of the original Blackfriars Theatre in London. She also has directed student performances of scenes from Shakespeare in her courses.
