ARTIST STATEMENT:
My oil paintings explore the seeable natural world and the metaphors it provides for our finite human experience. I am interested in recording critical moments of beauty and personal encounter. Wild spaces, rugged topography, and the churn of land and sea provide inspiration. The locations in my paintings have imprecise coordinates in space and time, but their titles offer clues. My abstracted approach toward color, texture and form mimics and challenges reality. Many of the artworks reference common elements of the New England landscape. Others suggest the mystery of places that I have traveled to or dreamt about. Through painting, I attempt to record memory and suspend the human limitations of time for both me (the maker) and my audiences.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Lindsey Perkel was born and raised in Glastonbury, Connecticut. Following graduation from high school, she lived away from my home state for a decade in the pursuit of higher education, volunteerism, work, and international service. She graduated with a Fine Arts degree from Skidmore College and a Master of Arts degree in Painting from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Alongside her creative practice, she holds 15 years of professional work in museum and gallery education. She lives in Northwestern Connecticut with her husband and teenaged stepdaughters, and their puppy, Noodles. Outside of the studio, she loves playing fiddle and guitar and singing, visiting museums, local food and coffee, and coastal New England. Her painting studio is located at Whiting Mills in Winsted.
