Modernism and Tradition – The Foundation of Modern Art in America.

Join Norfolk’s Robert Dance in conversation with Hugh Eakin, author of Picasso’s War: How Modern Art Came to America on March 16th at 4:30 PM. When the Museum of Modern Art opened its doors in 1929, artists like Pablo Picasso were renowned in Europe but disdained in the United States. Ten years later, Americans across the country were clamoring to see his art. How did modern art finally breakthrough in America and how did New York become the epicenter of cultural life? In his book, Eakin tells the story of how a single exhibition—a decade in the making—forever changed American taste, and in doing so, saved dozens of the twentieth century’s most enduring artworks from the Nazi’s. Eakins describes how two men—first John Quinn, then Alfred Barr, Jr. changed the art world forever. Eakin’s will sign copies after the event.
