Faith Vicinaza Color Meditations
Byrde + the b is pleased to announce Faith Vicinanza “Color Meditations” an exhibit of mandala paintings opening Saturday July 17, 2021, from 5-7pm. The exhibition runs through Saturday September 4, 2021.
Her painting takes time, is very meditative and focused. The defining criterion for a dot painting is the technique itself — repeated imprints of a paint covered brush, dotting stick or other implement onto the painting surface and in doing so, there are recognizable ‘dot’ marks on the painting surface. Pointillism, which leans more to being abstract than to having the discipline of a modern dot painting, is a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of color are applied in patterns to form an image. Georges Seurat and Paul Signac developed the technique in 1886, branching from Impressionism. Dot painting, however, seeks a level of perfection and precision in the dots that is not inherent in pointillism.
The word mandala comes from Sanskrit, an ancient Indian language. Literally, mandala means “circle.” The circle is seen as a magical form, without beginning and end, just as the universe is believed to have no end. Ms. Vicinanza’s work is sometimes driven by or centered on or informed by the idea of a mandala, though not strictly. In her often-over-committed life, dot painting has become a way to stop, sit, clear her mind, be with the paint, the patterns, allowing her pieces to emerge organically and rarely does she have a set idea of where the painting will go. This approach produces unique, one-of-a-kind works that are distinct and drenched in color.
Her mantra “Slow down, enjoy the moment” is also her artist statement. Put another way, there is only this moment, watch it unfold, watch the painting unfold, the rain, the new grass, enjoy mixing colors, or a walk in the early hours of a new day. Take your time with her painting, look closely, enjoy the moment.
