Book Signing
The Hickory Stick Bookshop welcomes author David Newell who will be here to sign copies of his two books “Sarah Jane” and “Petey and Quackers” on Saturday, November 18th at 3 pm.
ABOUT THE BOOKS
“Sarah Jane” is a story about Newell’s aunt. It takes place on an old established farm in Vermont. Her personal diaries were all the research he needed for stories that make up the novel. A family of four, which includes two boys, struggled to survive during the winters in Vermont. In 1872 the family unit adopted a black boy, a runaway slave from Georgia. He doesn’t immediately meld into the Vermont culture, but the family prevails. It is a humorous, wholesome, good read.
“Petey and Quackers” is a stirring children’s story of Petey, a pigeon, and his friendship with a disabled duck named Quackers. Quackers is a duck that chases away those that disturb her, even biting those that don’t move out of her way. But Peter, to everyone’s surprise, becomes her protector.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
David Newell was born into a large family and raised in Woodbury, Connecticut. As a boy he spent summers in Vermont at his father’s family farm and was always surrounded by chickens. He had an egg route and a paper route. He is a former English teacher, a Selectman of his town and a 20-year member of the school board. Newell owned a local family hardware and feed store for 25 years until his retirement. At the store he sold baby ducks and chicks which inspired him, along with his granddaughter, to write “Petey and Quackers”.
As a teenager, Newell helped his Aunt Sarah around the house, mowing the lawn, shoveling snow, and running errands. When Sarah died, she left the contents of her house to David’s sister and the contents of the cellar to Newell as that was where his uncle kept all his carpentry tools. Also in the cellar was a trunk filled with a collection of Sarah’s diaries, the oldest dating back to 1868. The diaries inspired his book “Sarah Jane”.
Newell and his wife live in Woodbury, CT. They have two children and one grandchild.
