Strictly Ballroom
You just don’t get many films like 1992’s STRICTLY BALLROOM anymore.
So make sure to save Sat., Nov. 11 on your dance card. That’s when we’ll be screening this glittering gem from Down Under at our favorite space, North Canaan’s Colonial Theater, where Boondocks got its start almost 7 years ago! And you can be sure we’ll make good use of the upstairs ballroom, natch!
A quirky, campy romp through the cutthroat world of ballroom dancing in Southwestern Australia, the debut feature from Baz Luhrmann (Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge, Elvis) hits many of the extravagant visual and tonal notes that would give his later films their culture-moving punch – but, most impressively, it does so on a more modest scale and budget.
Strictly Ballroom is the story of an established but maverick figure in the Australian competitive ballroom dancing circuit who finds himself without a partner before the biggest competition of the year. Released in 1992, this offbeat romantic comedy has shades of Dirty Dancing, that is, if it came with an ersatz spray-tan sheen.
As the event approaches, we’ll be announcing all the ambitious themed elements, so don’t delay, get your tickets today (at link in profile), space will be limited!
