One visit to New Milford’s Good Eats Restaurant & Bar is enough to convince any diner why it deserves being voted into Litchfield Magazine’s Reader’s Choice issue for two years in a row. Under the ownership of Edward Maynard and Brian Cabrera, chef Kevin DeLuca’s inventive spin on traditional American food makes everything that comes out of his kitchen special. Take, for example, the humble pita; in his hands this pillowy, chewy bread comes out grilled and served with a side of whipped butter, honey, radish, and Maldon salt. So simple yet so creative. Similarly, his pork belly “Scotched Egg”with daikon radish and honey crisp apple elevates this pub staple to gourmet levels. Even his hamburger, served with cheddar cheese, house-made kimchi, Asian pickles and scallion ginger aioli, is utterly unique and absolutely delicious. The same can be said for everything else on the menu.

Happy spring! I am delighted to present our garden issue, filled with stories that capture the start of Litchfield County’s blossoming season. In this issue, author Jane Garmey invites readers into her Cornwall garden, offering inspiration for green thumbs everywhere. We delve into mushroom inoculation and discover Lindera at The Fen, a nursery passionate about ecoregion seeds and plants. We also get a peek into the structured gardens of Glenn Hillman in Litchfield and Cobble Pond Farm and Sharon.

We meet Will Schenk, the owner of the recently renovated Cornwall Market; and learn about the world class talent performing at the Merryall Center this summer. We spotlight a lovely Greek revival in Roxbury owned by Dr. Yarberry Allen and designed by her friend Glenn Gissler. Paul Marcarelli interviews Sylvia and Jay Abbott about their 50 year relationship with their garden (and each other).

We celebrate local pride with Pride in the Hills initiatives; and Michelle Madden indulges your senses with a review of The Cue, a new restaurant in New Milford. And let’s not forget our summer camp listing, ensuring memorable adventures for our younger residents. Wishing you all a very happy spring!

Holistic medicine is based on the philosophy that mind, body, and spirit are one. Dr. McKelvey augments this approach with genomic testing, which identifies unique variants in a person’s genetic code that could be leading to suboptimal health. A simple cheek swab provides data on thousands of variants, or what Dr.McKelvey calls “typos” in our genomic code. These variants get turned on and off like a switch (through diet and lifestyle) and if not identified and managed, can lead to everything from obesity to dementia.
