Faces & Places Opening Reception for upcoming Art Show
New Art Exhibit “Faces and Places”
with August 14th Opening Reception, a free event.
Studio Hill Gallery, 507 Main ST S, Woodbury, CT will be presenting “Faces and Places” a duo art show featuring the paintings of Newtown, CT based artists Stephanie Adam and Carol Gaulin-McKenzie. Stephanie and Carol first met each other when they were both completing their MFAs at The University of Cincinnati and have been lifelong friends since. It was a natural progression to exhibit their work together.
For Stephanie Adam, color is the essential element in her work. She explores a variety of tones while building and layering textural qualities, often contrasting matte with glossed surfaces. Many of the symbols in her paintings are from everyday experiences, and she uses them as vehicles to animate the borders. Adam’s work often incorporates patterns traced from antique tools, toys, or hardware, while using historical images seen, or objects found while traveling. Very often the shapes that march around the edges of her paintings are cut off, so that the viewer imagines the action going beyond the picture plane. For this reason, Adam’s paintings require ample space around them. The tension felt between the restful center and the animated borders creates a work that feels bold, simple, and direct.
Adam has exhibited in numerous galleries and museums, including the Aldrich Museum, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Albright-Knox Museum, the Bruce Museum, the Mattatuck Museum, and the Neuberger Museum. Her work is also in the permanent collections of Coopers and Lybrand Industries, Exxon-Mobil Corp, Hoffman Architects, Houbigant Perfume, and Pharmor Corp.
Carol Gaulin-McKenzie’s inspiration for her life-size paintings come from her own photos and those of her husband and friends. Though realistic, they are made from a variety of papers, fabrics, and materials that are selected for the basic colors then glued or taped on to Masonite, gatorboard, rice paper, or black shades. Using oil pastels to print or draw over the large flat shapes, she creates a space that is sometimes flat and sometimes modeled. Extensive travels throughout the United States and the Globe have added to the depths of her artistic endeavors. Gaulin-McKenzie’s work has been featured in numerous art galleries and museums including The Bruce Museum – Greenwich, CT, The Cincinnati Art Museum, Housatonic Community College – Bridgeport, CT, Pelham Art Center – Pelham, NY, Silvermine Guild of Artists – New Canaan, CT, and the Peace Airforce Gallery – Dover, NH.
The show opens on Sunday August 14th and will run through Sunday September 4, 2022. An Opening Reception to meet the artists will take place on Sunday August 14, 2022, from 3p.m. to 5p.m. Light refreshments will be served.
