36th Annual Lake Waramaug Polar Bear Run
February 23, 2020

36th Annual Lake Waramaug Polar Bear Run

The Lake Waramaug Polar Bear Run is the oldest winter race in the State. The 7.6 mile Run loops around beautiful, glacial Lake Waramaug and passes through three towns: Kent, Warren, and Washington. Runners from all over Connecticut and surrounding states come to participate in this fun annual tradition on what is arguably the most scenic course in all of Connecticut.

All proceeds from the Run benefit Guiding Eyes for the Blind. This organization raises and trains guide dogs to partner with blind and visually impaired people. Their facilities in Yorktown and Patterson, NY train and partner more than 160 guide dogs each year. All services are offered free of charge to those in need. At the 2019 event runners were greeted by a group of future guide dogs and their handlers who came to raise awareness about Guiding Eyes and provide support for the Run. Guiding Eyes for the Blind has been the Run’s charitable beneficiary for the past 3 years during which time the Run  has raised over $6,000 for the organization. In 2020 Race Directors Stephanie and Ed Raftery are hoping to reach the $10,000 mark.

The Run is organized by TrailHeads, a Kent based business that designs and markets  hats, gloves, headbands and related accessories for runners and outdoor enthusiasts. TrailHeads President and Co Founder Stephanie Raftery says, “Pulling together the Polar Bear Run is one of the highlights of our year. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see hundreds of runners from all over Connecticut and beyond come out to enjoy a run around this beautiful lake while raising money for Guiding Eyes.”

The Kent Lions Club plays a key role by providing financial support as well as volunteers. Their support is instrumental to the race’s continuation and success. Most notably, the Lions provide the heated tent which serves as both the race registration site and houses the post-race refreshments.

The Run’s sponsors include several local businesses including  Kent Wine & Spirit and Hopkins Vineyard. The Lake Waramaug Country Club generously provides the use of their property for both parking and the start / finish zone. Hopkins Vineyard will once again host the “Post Polar Party” for all participants and volunteers. Strong Core Fitness will be on hand with a massage table to offer therapeutic services to runners after the race.

The 36th Annual Lake Waramaug Polar Bear Run is scheduled for February 23rd at 11 AM.

Register online at lakewaramaugpolarbearrun.com or at the race until 10:45 am. The first 300 registrants will receive a commemorative Polar Bear Run trucker hat from TrailHeads.  Come and join in an incredible community event!
