Beyond Face Value: Art, Race and Empathy

Four Thursday Zoom session plus a kit full of new art materials will set up your teen or tween for a portrait making collage process like a vision board in reverse:

Guided by teaching artist Sarah Zahran, students will dive into a rewarding and therapeutic art making process, creating portraits, exploring what it means to be “seen”.

Looking through the lens of contemporary black artists and activists, students of all backgrounds are welcome to join this free class!

Using collage to explore the many layers of identity, students will work in two phases, crafting backgrounds based on personal histories. Phase two adds portraits drawn in pastels, with students learning techniques for shading and drawing skin tones.

This will be a safe space to express and explore identity and belonging. Join live or recorded. Customized kits will provide all required materials.

Beyond Face Value is offered free of charge thanks to the support of the Litchfield Education Foundation.
